It goes without saying that when it comes to internet content, images are everything! Think about it: more than half of the content you scroll through in a day is image-based, whether it be a still image or a gif. Having impactful imagery on a website or social media profile is essential, but wait! Are you posting copyright-free images?
What are image copyrights?
The internet is a wealth of resources, but some of those resources are protected by copyrights. This means that they cannot be used without authorization. This is especially true for images. Before you right-click and save that really cool mountain scene photo, ask yourself: is this image copyright-free? Using a copyright protected image without the proper release can end up costing you thousands of dollars.
The bad news: most images you find through a simple google search have copyrights. The good news: there are multiple ways to find amazing copyright-free images in the public domain that can be used and modified however you like!
How to source copyright-free images:
- Google search with usage rights filters to find only copyright free images. Learn how here!
- Visit copyright-free image websites like Unsplash, Pixabay, or Pexels.
- If you must use a copyrighted image, learn how to attribute properly, and ensure that you get the necessary permissions before using it. Also, note that some creative commons images also require attribution.
